Youn Sun Nah's 2013 Album Lento before Youn Sun Nah Quartet's İstanbul Borusan Concert on February 6th, 2014

Let's give some biographical information first: Youn Sun Nah's original name is Na Yoon-sun and she was born in South Korea in 1969. Her mother is a musical actress and her father is a prominent conductor in the country. We don't see any important music related activities besides her role in a musical until she decided to go to Paris in 1995 to study jazz and chanson. Following her education in many famous and long-established jazz schools in France, we see 5 albums until the ACT related part of her career begins between 2008 and 2009: Reflect(2001), Light for The People(2002), Down By Love(2003), So I Am...(2004), Memory Lane(2007). During this period she starts to take stage with her own quintet and became known to Europe. Many awards taken from Korea, Grand Prize from Jazz à Juan Concours and an invitation from world famous jazz stage of US, Jazz At Lincoln Center result in her presentation also to the world stage. After the first five albums including performances from many genres, produced in 2008 but released from ACT in 2009 the album Voyage promotes her career with the very important Chevaliers of the Ordre des Arts award, which was given to many celebrity artists such as David Bowie and Dee Dee Bridgewater before. Meantime, top places in the charts, many awards and encouraging reviews from all around the world are begun to be taken rightfully. Released again from ACT in 2011 and including a spectacular cover of Metallica's Enter Sandman, the album Same Girl triggers starting of another important period in her career which is full of concerts and important awards such as ECHO's 2011 Best International Jazz Vocal among other important candidates such as Stacey Kent and Lizz Wright. The last album Lento is released in 2013. It has taken attention from many different genre listeners thanks to Youn Sun Nah's successful vocal performance and melodic compositions. A long tour of the album with many spectacular concerts for many important jazz festivals all around the world starts in the same year and is still ongoing.  The album is awarded by German Gold Jazz in 2013. When we look at the genres in wide spectrum of ACT we can say that the albums of Youn Sun Nah belong to Vocal Jazz and World Music at the same time. ACT musicians, double bass player Lars Danielsson and guitarist Ulf Wakenius can be seen in all three albums. Next to them, long time collaboration Xavier Desandre-Navarre is also on the percussion for all these works. These four musicians can be defined as a quartet formed of close friends at the same time. Mathias Eick was on trumpet for the first album Voyage, whereas Vincent Peirani is on accordion for Lento.

As far as I remembered Youn Sun Nah was a guest of Borusan Music House in İstanbul in 2012 with Ulf Wakenius. This time İstanbul audience will be able to listen to her quartet  during the tour of the last album Lento on February 6th this year. We sometimes see Simon Tailleu on double bass instead of long time member Lars Danielsson in Youn Sun Nah Quartet. İstanbul audience will also listen to this bass player. In my humble opinion, the performance will be given by passing the percussion partitions in the album to guitar and accordion will try to carry some melodic bass and cello contributions of Lars in some pieces. As someone based in Ankara I won't be able to join that week-day concert. But as similar to a well known Turkish song: "There is a concert far away. Even we can't go, even we can't listen to it, we are at this concert." My detailed review about the album is as follows:

The album Lento is influenced by many genres from a general perspective. Jazz, faces us in many parts of the album especially in instrumental performances. However, the vocal can be said to belong to a style including pop, rock and folk genres' influences and perform pieces affected by classical compositions like singing French chansons in English.

The album starts with the title track. Lento means many things. Being the name of the place of French Commune in Corsica, it is mostly used to define a very slow tempo in music or a musical genre affected by disco. The composition and the name are actually inspired from Alexander Skrjabin's Prelude op. 16 Nr. 4 in E minor and its tempo. The duo performances of long time collaborated Lars Danielsson and Ulf Wakenius are very successful. Youn Sun Nah sings as if trying to tell us that this album would be a calmer one compared to previous ACT albums with her slightly reverberated vocal.

Lament is a composition of Youn Sun Nah and it starts with the impressive participation of Vincent Peirani with his accordion to the flawless rhythm of Lars Danielsson and Xavier Desandre-Navarre, which feels like going on for hours and we are suddenly caught by them in the middle of the room. Youn Sun Nah comes to the stage while singing the manifest like lyrics of the piece not only in an emotional state of lament consistent to piece's name but also in a tangled state of mind between desperation and bravery. "I'm not ready for anything" is the main theme. "Neither can I go forward, nor can I turn back." Lars Danielsson's melodic bass, which has strange relations with my sensitive transducers, goes along the piece by playing only the first notes of each measure without filling the background too much. However, how controlled the bass remains on the stage and how it becomes one of the most important characters of the performance with its mother-earth-like self-confidence as if it says "without me you can not exist", are hard to understand without listening. We see Xavier Desandre-Navarre, who has played for a long time with Lars Danielsson, on cajon as well as with his other percussion equipment in this piece. Especially the intense strokes to the cajon, which rises the tension to a higher level when Youn Sun Nah has just climbed the first tenisonal slope of the piece, become one of the main characters of the performance. In my opinion, this piece is one of the most harmonic pieces to the vocal style of Youn Sun Nah in her own discography. Having very sharp phrasings, Youn Sun Nah creates an easily sensible, dignified, attractive and colorful texture over other instruments. Even the performance is not among her acrobatic ones pushing the limits, the rise and falls of the flowing vocal are not only very harmonic with the phonetic structures of the words but also capable of giving the meanings of the lyrics with pronunciations. Through the end, all band members contribute to increase the tension: Youn Sun Nah passes to the high pitches. Vincent Peirani move the accordion with higher speed and intervals, Lars Danielsson pulls the strings faster and with more minimal movements and Xavier Desandre-Navarre adds some more extra touches to the rhythm. The song ends abruptly after the band's instrumental part following Youn Sun Nah's last words in her manifest. It feels like sounds stand still in the air for a while. I have to remind you that the live performances of these pieces in quartet generally are made more minimally by giving the percussion parts to guitar and assigning Lars Danielsson's bow to help Vincent Peirani in carrying the melody.

Covered many times by many musicians, Hurt of Nine Inch Nails became a totally different piece with voice of Youn Sun Nah in this album. Started with the sharp sound of Ulf Wakenius, the piece presents us again the impressive harmony between the duo of Ulf Wakenius and Youn Sun Nah. They will able to decrease and increase the tension even on their own with just a vocal and a guitar.

Composed by Youn Sun Nah and Vincent Peirani, Empty Dream is a composition in which we hold the sounds in emptiness, consistent with its name. The Performance starts with Youn Sun Nah's vocal which sounds like murmurings of a lullaby. Afterwards, we listen to a duo performance with Lars Danilesson. Lars Danielsson presents a very harmonious accompaniment to Youn Sun Nah's vocal here. The piece starts to dissolve when the accordion and the percussion come to the stage. Especially, the magic ambiance given by the accordion makes the audience feel like to be on a flying carpet.

In the characteristic composition of Ulf Wakenius, Momento Magico, we see that how wonderful performances can be produced by long time collaborations of Youn Sun Nah and Ulf Wakenius. Youn Sun Nah accompany each note of the guitar with very spontaneous and sharp scat movements. It is hard to understand which leads and which follows. For sure this shows how successful the performance is. Especially the parts where Youn Sun Nah reaches to highest pitches right after low frequencies and climbs the hills with just a single breath are amazing. After the duo entrance, we see that the other three enter the stage suddenly with a very defined and tensional rhythm. We listen to a very organic quintet in the main body. The silent parts where rhythm trio leaves the duo alone, the fantastic guitar solo of Ulf Wakenius through the end and the following lesson-like vocal performance of Youn Sun Nah make the performance a very important one.

Compossed by Youn Sun Nah, Soundless Bye starts with solo introduction of Lars Danielsson for the main theme. The breathing sounds during this solo and the melancholic aura given by Youn Sun Nah to the guitar&accoridon is unrivaled. I strongly recommend you give attention to especially to the English pronunciation and intonations.

Youn Sun Nah composed Full Circle with Vincent Peirani. The first part almost sounds like a baroque guitar entrance thanks to Ulf Wakenius. A very fluent melody is mostly driven by accordion. Xavier Dessandre-Navarre makes us feel like there is a drummer besides the percussion with his march-like rhythms. Youn Sun Nah accompanies her own vocal in this piece.

The cover made to Stan Jones country style Ghost Riders in the Sky is also noteworthy. Xavier Desandre-Navarre presents one of the most attractive entrances of the album by his colorful and sharp beats which are in harmony with the similar vocal. The harmony between guitar, bass and accordion is surprising. In my opinion, Youn Sun Nah creates an historical performance with her theatrical vocal in the chorus. The high pitch performances of the vocal are just incredible. Melodies from the throat, passages to the rock vocal and the incredible harmony between our musicians meanwhile create a very impressive overall performance.

Waiting is a composition of Lars Danielsson and Caecilie Norby. For this reason, we just stay speechless and start to watch what's going on when Lars Danielsson starts to play his double bass (it can also be a cello since I saw before that he played cello like a bass with some effects.) like a guitar as comfortable as speaking his native language and pours himself towards Youn Sun Nah's vocal like a wine. Lars Danielsson accompany his own stood still rhythms with his cello calling us from old times thanks to the loop machine. We hear small contributions from the guitar.

The Traditional Korean song Arirang starts with the main theme given by some simple sounds from something like a music-box, wave sounds from percussion and entrance of Lars Danielsson and Ulf Wakenius. Then Youn Sun Nah starts to sing the song like a flying bird returning to home. It is a song whose sharp corners are softened compared to what we hear from traditional Korean vocals.

The cello entrance of Youn Soun Nah's composition New Dawn almost sounds like the first notes of Pachabel's Canon in D. Having talked about the issue, let me express once more that I think the compositions in the album are under a certain classical music effect. The percussion coming afterwards produce an interesting contradiction with the general aura of the piece created by cello and accordion. Youn Sun Nah once again presents a very clear performance to us with her characteristic vocal in this last piece.

The recording, mixing and mastering is all made by Lars Nilsson in Nilento Studios in Gothenburg in Autumn 2012. Lars Nilsson and his studio Nilento are very well known with their many great works and the names can be seen in previous albums.

The People(2002), Down By Love(2003), So I Am...(2004), Memory Lane(2007).

Parçanın ismi ve bestesi aslında Alexander Skrjabin'in Prelude op. 16 Nr. 4 in E minor adlı eserinden ve temposundan esinlenilmiştir.

Nine Inch Nails'in çokça “cover”lanan parçası Hurt, Youn Sun Nah'ın inanılmaz derinlikteki vokali ile baştan yaratılmış gibidir.

Stan Jones'un country türündeki Ghost Riders in the Sky'a yapılan cover da oldukça dikkat çekicidir.

Youn Soun Nah bestesi New Dawn'ın çello girişinde parça neredeyse Pachabel'in Canon in D'sini andırır.

After The ACT Jubilee Night Concert in İstanbul on October 7th

I am not going to explain just a concert or a musician in this article because it will be a kind of understatement to write ordinarily what I have lived on October 7th in İstanbul. In fact my consciousness and subconsciousness were continuously moving me back and forth since I have heard about the event. However, you know, things you have faced in real life can sometimes simply exceed what you dream. The last Sunday was just one of such days. (I should mention that I will continue on writing in this lyrical and subjective style throughout the post which is consistent with the spirit of music and explain my dreamy view of things. For anyone having a problem about that and waiting a solid objectiveness such as in soccer reviews, I advise changing the channel.)

I took the flight in the early morning from Ankara (capital of Turkey) to İstanbul. Just after landing on airport I made my way to Arnavutköy quickly. The beautiful reason why I am so excited and being in rush is that I was going to meet founder of ACT, Siggi Loch, for lunch before ACT Jubilee Night Concert. Easier than said, Siggi (Siegfried) Loch has realized his dreams of producing the music he likes by founding ACT, which is one of the most important jazz labels in Europe.  I could not even made a question list but at least I managed to take some notes on my phone. I have had just basic goals in this meeting: preventing myself from getting too excited, trying to listen carefully and not to talk too much. Frankly, I am not quite successful on attaining such goals. Forgive me, I was with my role model and asking for guidance.

Although Siggi Loch has vast experience in music and life, I have found him quite sincere and modest. I mean, I feel like I am not talking with someone who worked with legendary Arif Mardin and Nesuhi Ertegün for Warner Music and founding ACT records company. He became more important for me with his each comment and story about music and musicians. He has not come alone to Turkey, his wife Sissy Loch was with us at the lunch. Both of them liked İstanbul very much. We have talked about our meals, streets and wines. He has mentioned that he fall in love with İstanbul and it’s been 20 years since they last visited İstanbul.

We sometimes remembered the legendary musicians, sometimes talked about new talents during our lunch with creator of ACT. Esbjörn Svensson was the main topic for a long time. According to Siggi Loch, Esbjörn Svensson Trio is the best trio of their era and From Gagarin's Point of View is a very important album in jazz history. We fell in sorrow when he was talking about his passing away and we saw Sissy Loch crying while she was explaining Esbjörn Svensson’s wife and sons. Siggi Loch said “At first, I just decided to finish ACT after Esbjörn passed away but there were lots of new talents in the label. Michael Wollny is especially important for me with his special talent and you will see what I am talking about tonight. After I have considered these, my decision was on continuing.” I felt that pianists are especially important for Siggi Loch. He has explained their musical adventures with Vijay Iyer in detail. We have talked about his last album Accelerando and his success of becoming cover for Downbeat magazine in UK. Iiro Rantala, who is one of the talented new pianists of ACT, was mentioned as possibly the most technically successful pianist of the label so far by Siggi Loch. I have learned that Siggi Loch likes his album Lost Heroes very much just like me.

In order to relief the environment a bit after Esbörn Svensson’s depressing story, I have asked to Siggi Loch the first thing that come into his mind when I say Turkish music. After some trial, we have learned that he has listened to percussionist Burhan Öcal in one of his performance and liked it. When I asked him whether I should stay as a music enthusiast or I can do something professional about music, Siggi Loch started to tell us a fabulous story of jazz world guided with legendary Turkish music producers Arif Mardin and Nesuhi Ertegün. The last days of Nesuhi Ertegün, the East-West label and his Warner Music days... The moment that he said “All these people are Turkish then why not?“ probably is when seeds that will change my life in future are planted in my brain. I have felt a certain self-respect with these important words. We learned that he does not like two things. One is working with musicians whose main concentration is on money and the other one is listening to music while doing something else. I was about to ask him to take me and educate as a disciple but I restrained myself. After that fabulous meeting we have said goodbye to each other to meet again at the concert. Siggi Loch told me that he had a surprise for me at the concert by calling me with my name. While I was trying to decide on whether this is dream or real life, I just shook hands with him and left.

There was another good concert 2 hours before ACT Jubilee Night in İstanbul Lütfi Kırdar Hall. Miles Smiles project gathered many wonderful musicians who are Miles Davis’ students at the same time. We have listened many qualified variations of Miles Davis’ compositions at this concert. The Hammond performance of Joey DeFrancesco and drummer Omar Hakim were highlights of the night. We have faced with a certain reverberation and reflection problem in this concert due to acoustic design of the hall. Thus, the overall effect on the audience was not as good as it should be considering the musicians’ performances. Although the emptiness of the hall approximately to the half of it due to Fenerbahçe-Beşiktaş football match is not important for me, I think the organization should check itself and take it as a feedback.

I have met Siggi Loch and Sissy Loch again between two concerts. Siggi Loch was carrying my gift in his hand which was my surprise. The new album of Wolfgang Haffner, Heart of the Matter, which is not released yet. It is hard for me to explain my feelings at the moment that I took it.

After having a great day and warming up with a good concert it was time for ACT Family Band to be on the stage. Siggi Loch was on the stage just before them. He seemed a bit sorry to have seen the hall is only half-full. However, he has shortly  shared the 20 years history of ACT label by mentioning names of Nesuhi Ertegün and Arif Mardin. He also dedicated the night to them. The concert started with a problem in the microphones and our high energy level is disturbed a bit. I think the reasons were the previous night’s ACT Jubilee concert in Malmö, Sweden and the Miles Smiles project just before this concert preventing the musicians to perform a soundcheck. However we had the wonderful Nils Landgren on the stage. He is someone who knows what to do when and affects people not only with his music but also with his charisma. He managed to save the night and made a perfect intro. He gave a perfect description of a meal to explain the diversity and richness in ACT label all around the world. While Nils Landgren was starting to do that there was just Lars Danielsson on his double bass at the back playing a walking bass instead of his well known lyrical tunes. After that Nils Landgren invited his friends from ACT Family Band one by one: drummer Wolfgang Haffner, pianist Michael Wollny, saxophonist Céline Bonacino, trumpeter Verneri Pohjola, vocalist Caecilie Norby and guitarist Johan Norberg. Each new musician took part in the first piece Family Stew by adding their partitions and in the end, the whole band finished it together. Johan Norberg and Nils Landgren performed a very emotional piece from their nostalgic Chapter Two project called Get Here just after that. Johan Norberg participated in the concert as another famous guitarist of ACT label since the regular member of Family Band Nguyen Le is not with the band. The playlist was very similar to previous ACT Jubilee Nights with some interesting differences: But This One Goes in Four from Ancient History (2012) album of Verneri Pohjola, Zig-zag Blues from Céline Bonacino’s Way of Life album, Lonely Dancer from Michael Wollny, Silent Way from Wolfgang Haffner’s album Shapes, Hymn (from Liberetto) and Pasodoble from Lars Danielsson, Bei mir bist du schoen and Dead Princess from Arabesque (2011) of Caecilie Norby and a Joni Mitchell cover Both Sides from her voice and Stars in Your Eyes from last album of Nils Landgren.

Performances are given by changing configurations of artists on the stage. Nils Landgren took part in more pieces than what I expected with his velvet soft voice. His tiredness that is obvious from previous night could not prevent him from making incredible trombone solos. The highlights of the performance were the mimics of Lars Danielsson while performing with his double bass, Nils Landgren’s raising arms through the end of the solos and Michael Wollny’s dances with his piano. Once again, the last performance of the band just before the encore was Dodge The Dodo of From Gagarin’s Point of View (1999) of Esbjörn Svensson Trio. The guitar solo intro from Johan Norberg for Dodge the Dodo was incredible. Michael Wollny proved himself again in this extraordinary piece having nice piano partitions. I did not understand whether he danced with the piano or played it. There is a profound and organic connection between his hands and instrument. His cold tone remembering us the Scandinavian tradition was so nice. We continued to remember the legendary Esbjörn at the encore. When Nils Landgren mentioned the name of Esbjörn Svensson the audience responded with applause. Love is Real was created by Esbjörn Svensson Trio and Josh Haden (son of Charlie Haden) in the album Seven Days of Falling (2003) of the trio. It is actually based on the composition Believe, Beleft and Below which is in the same album and lyrics are written and sung by Josh Haden. We have listened Love is Real from Nils Landgren as the main vocal and Caecilie Norby as the side vocal. While Verneri Pohjola is playing the ballad Nils Landgren closed his eyes and Caecilie Norby looked down. We dived into dreams, sorrow, melancholy and asked why again.

And the concert ended just like that. I have taken lots of autographs on my albums. I almost have all albums of Nils Landgren and Lars Danielsson but the meeting could be realized only after that concert. It was so easy for them to remember me because of my social networking, blogging and my dedication to ACT label. I was like meeting some relatives from my family.

As a summary I was as happy as I can be. The only huge missing one was Esbjörn Svensson, whom I could not met in this life. However, I am sure that he was on the stage and between us during and after the concert since there are lots of people thinking and dreaming about him. I know that’s a dream but you know, people live what they feel.

7 Ekim ACT Jubilee Night Konseri’nden Aklımızda Kalanlar

Arif Mardin'in caz dünyası için önemi.

Siggi yemekte söz verdiği ve bana hediye etmek istediği Wolfgang Haffner'in henüz piyasaya sunulmamış Heart of the Matter albümünü de yanında getirmiş.

Her yeni gelen sanatçı ilk parça Family Stew'in kendisine ait partisyonlarını çalarak sonunda sahnede bir bütün halini aldılar. Bu performansın hemen ardından normalde ACT Family Band’de gitarist olarak yer alan ünlü Vietnamlı müzisyen Nguyen Le’nin konsere katılamamasından dolayı diğer ACT Jubilee Night gecelerinden farklı olarak Nils Landgren ve Johan Norberg'in Chapter Two'dan hatırlanacak nostaljik çalışmalarından biri Get Here ikili tarafından icra edildi. Devamında ACT Family Band’den diğer ACT Jubilee Night konserlerine benzer olmakla beraber ilginç değişiklikler de içeren bir parça listesinde şu eserler çalındı; Verneri Pohjola’nın ACT’den 2012’de yayınlanan Ancient History albümünden But This One Goes in Four, Céline Bonacino’nun tek ACT albümü Way of Life’dan Zig-zag Blues, Wolfgang Haffner’in Shapes albümünden Silent way, Lars Danielsson’dan Hymn ve Pasodoble, Michael Wollny'den Lonely Dancer, Caecilie Norby’nin Arabesque (2012) albümünden
Bei mir bist du schoen, Dead Princess ve yine onun sesinden bir Joni Mitchell coverı Both Sides, Nils Landgren’in son albümünden Stars in Your Eyes.

Jubilee Night’ın bisten önce son olarak çalınan eseri yine müteveffa Esbjörn Svensson’un o unutulmaz 1999’da yayımlanan From Gagarin’s Point of View albümündeki en başarılı bestelerinden Dodge The Dodo parçası oldu. Özellikle parçanın girişinde Johan Norberg’in gitar introsu unutulmazdı. Dodge the Dodo ile daldığımız hatıralara biste devam ettik. Nils Landgren bis performansından hemen önce “şu an aramızda olmayan arkadaşımız” diye Esbjörn Svensson’dan bahsettiğinde salondan alkışlar yükseldi. 2003 Seven Days of Falling albümünde yer alan duygusal beste Believe Beleft Below’a Charlie Haden’in oğlu Josh Haden’in söz yazması ile ortaya çıkan Love is Real’i ana olarak Nils Landgren ve yan olarak Caecilie Norby’nin vokalinden dinledik.

The Concert in My Dreams, The ACT Jubilee Night in İstanbul on October 7th

I heard about The ACT Jubilee Night  that will be held in İstanbul long ago. As far as I have remembered, it was on June. Since I'm a dedicated ACT follower and collector, I usually look at their website to learn about released albums and new concerts. ACT is the German Label that has the largest place in my archive. At that time, I just wanted to learn about the place of Liberetto concert of Lars Danielsson and Thread of Life concert of Magnus Öström which will be performed in İstanbul Jazz Festival in July 2012. When I sorted the concerts with respect to countries, I have seen the announcement of the concert in my dreams. One of the ACT Jubilee Nights would be held in İstanbul on October 7th in Akbank Jazz Festival. Frankly, since it's only me who distribute ACT albums to my friends, talk about ACT musicians and unsuccessful to make people love Nordic records in Turkey, I rarely can listen lively to them in their performances in my country/city and I am not hopeful about that. Thus it is hard for me to express how happy I became when I heard about this concert in which most of my favorite musicians will be on stage. Easier said done, Nils Landgren, Lars Danielsson, Caecilie Norby, Michael Wollny, Wolfgang Haffner, Verneri Pohjola, Johan Norberg and Céline Bonacina are coming to İstanbul for one special concert. After learning about it, I met with Robert Mehmet Sinan İkiz, the Turkish drummer living in Sweden who is also a part of Nils Landgren Funk Unit just before a gig of Mehmet in İstanbul. On learning that Siggi Loch, founder of ACT will join the concert in İstanbul during that meeting, my happiness is doubled up.

ACT Family Band performs in The ACT  Jubilee Night concerts and the performances are dedicated to the 20th anniversary of foundation in 2012. They have performed six concerts so far. Four of them is held in Germany in four consecutive days on February, one of them was in Paris on April and last one was in Stockholm five days ago. The Hamburg concert is released as a 2 CD album. There will also be another concert  on October 6th in Malmö, Sweden. Lastly, İstanbul will be hosting to the last concert of this series on October 7th.

ACT Family Band is Nils Landgren (tb, voc), Michael Wollny (p), Verneri Pohjola (tr), Céline Bonacina (sax), Lars Danielsson (b), Nguyen Le (git), Caecilie Norby (voc) and Wolfgang Haffner (dr). The members of ACT family band can be varied from time to time. For instance we will see Johan Norberg instead of Nguyen Le in İstanbul concert. As the vocal we can see Caecilie Norby as well as Viktoria Tolstoy. Lezsek Mozdzer, who has recorded one of the best album of ACT, Pasodoble with Lars Danielsson, sometimes joins the Family Band as a guest.  Considering the discographies within ACT label and their works in ACT, I see Nils Landgren, Lars Danielsson, Wolfgang Haffner and Nyguen Le as the leaders of ACT Family Band. On the other hand, Michael Wollny has became a long-establidhed musician of ACT with his extraordinary musical perspective, talent and exciting discography. Listening to Verneri Pohjola, who is heard with recently released great albums will be very exciting considering his unique tone. I am sure that Caecilie Norby will attract many music enthusiasts’ attention in İstanbul with her emotional and strong voice. I am new at following Céline Bonacina who is an extraordinary leader for a trio with her baritone saxophone and I really wonder her unique performance.

It is difficult for me to make discrimination between any ACT musicians I am following. However, unfortunately, the one to which I am connected most deeply is not with us anymore. He is most probably became the pianist of the best trio in heaven now. I am talking about Esbjörn Svensson, who turned the jazz world upside down and about whom I wrote several articles in my blog before. His relationship with ACT starts after he has taken place as pianist of my another favorite ACT musician Nils Landgren’s band, Nils Landgren Funk Unit until when he played with his trio including his childhood friend Magnus Öström and Dan Berglund and recorded with some vocals such as Lina Nyberg. Esbjörn Svensson Trio released their album from ACT after that and they became the most worldwide famous musicians of ACT with their many great records and unbelievable live performances. After his sudden passing away in 2008 he has taken his place within unforgettable music legends. Drummer Magnus Öström and bassist Dan Berglund are going on their individual projects with their own groups within ACT now. By the way, I should say that ACT Family Band performs Esbjörn Svensson’s composition Love is Real in the Jubilee Nights as a tribute for him, whose lyrics are written by Josh Haden (son of Charlie Haden) from the album Seven Days of Falling, including one with vocal and one without vocal performance and which is performed in many times with different jazz vocals.

Nils Landgren, the man with the red horn, is born in 1956 and he is just like a Swedish Jazz School with his long-established Funk Unit, female vocal jazz albums he produced and albums in which he appeared as a sideman. There are approximately 25 albums in ACT with his leadership and 25 more produced or assisted by him as a guest. Thus, even the first musician signing a contract with ACT is Nguyen Le, I can say that the most important musician of ACT is Nils Landgren. He may be the most seen name in ACT after the founder Siggi Loch in the label. For me, the reason why we see so many Sweden musicians in German label ACT is Nils Landgren. In my opinion, Nils Landgren is one of the best trombonist in the world and a great funk musician. He was pretty active even before ACT. He is inspired by legendary Swedish musician Bengt-Arne Wallin as well as by Eje Thelin. He became well-known after seen in Baltic Jazz festivals in ‘90s. You should certainly listen to the live albums of Funk Unit. Swedish Folk Modern and Layers of Light, which they recorded as a duo with Esbjörn Svensson, are among the legendary albums of ACT with their beauty and simplicity. Salzau Music on Water is another one of his extraordinary work made with vibraphonist Christopher Dell and Lars Danielsson. I should mention the album Creole Love Call recorded with Joe Sample. Nils Landgren has a real profound and competitive vocal performance in this album.

Lars Danielsson, who is born in 1958, is another iconic musician in ACT. He is an important figure for ACT followers with his lyrical bass tone and violoncello playing in his great albums as well as in many other ACT musicians’ albums. He has performed and recorded with his own quartet formed of very important musicians before ACT. Moreover he has played and recorded with many worldwide famous musicians so far. He is so famous in my country especially with his latest album Liberetto in which you can see Tigran Hamasyan on piano. The reason for that is his tendency to our melodies in this album in my opinion. His albums Tarantella (in which you can see Eric Harland on drums) and Pasodoble recorded with Lezsek Mozdzer are among the best albums of ACT so far.

Wolfgang Haffner is the most seen name as the drummer in ACT albums. He has a characteristic and profound technic on drums. The album I like most from Wolfgang Haffner is Abracadabra which he recorded with Roberto di Gioia and Dieter Ilg as a celebrating album for Klaus Doldinger, released in 2006. He has many other records as a sideman as well as his own mostly electronic-jazz albums from ACT.
The trumpeter member of ACT Family Band is young Finn Verneri Pohjola. I have heard his name in two albums in 2012 one of which is his own Ancient History and the other one is Imaginary Room of new young talent of violin Adam Baldych. In his own album the composition Deism and But This One Goes in Four(played in the previous jubilee concert) compositions and Björk Hyperballad cover should be pointed out.

The first time I have heard voice of Caecilie Norby was in Lars Danilesson’s 2004 album Libera Me. She was beautifully singing the New Born Broken composition that she made with Lars Danielsson. Caecilie Norby has a mature, characteristic and impressive vocal. She is born in Denmark and not only interested in jazz but also is an important figure in rock scene. Caecilie’s first own album from ACT  is Arabesque which she produced with Lars Danielsson in 2012. However, there are lots of albums she appeared as a guest or as a side musician as well as found place in lots of vocal compilation albums in the name of magic/nordic voices of ACT. She also had lots of rock and jazz albums before working with ACT label.

French baritone saxophonist Céline Bonacina released the album Way of Life from ACT with her trio. It is unusual for a leader of a trio to be a baritone saxophonist. The same word   unusual can also be used as a descriptive for their music. Their performances are very minimal, dominated mostly by bass and baritone lines and full of improvisations. Johan Norberg is an important figure as an acoustic guitarist mostly in Sweden folk and world music. He has not only found Chapter Two with Nils Landgren and gave many live performances but also recorded many good albums which are released from ACT later on. Moreover he has lots of Swedish Folk Music albums from ACT with famous saxophonist Jonas Knutsson.

There are lot to say about Michael Wollny who has many good records with famous ACT musicians. He has recently added a perfect one to the albums he performed with his band [em] with the name  Wasted & Wanted. He also visited İstanbul in the tour held for this album. He is like a symbol for the reformist insight of ACT records. I remember young German pianist Michael Wollny always with a photo of him in the catalog I found in the album of E.S.T. Viaticum released from ACT in 2005. (He looks like Robert Smith from Cure with his too wavy hair in this photo.) The slogan written on this photo was “Everything Must Change” The message written here was as follows: “Nobody grows up by listening only to jazz music. Not even jazz musicians. Rock’n Roll, techno, folk, country, world, jazz and other styles are among the significant wide range of influences on most young musicians today. All these diverse musical forms can now be combined. Jazz is no longer just based on harmonic, structural and improvisational principles. Unlike in the past, jazz nowadays can not be described in terms of a definitive style. It has become a synonym for freedom and openness in its use of musical influences from diverse sources. We encourage musicians to reach out for a MUSIC BEYOND CLASSIFICATION”. Although this message seems to be written to young musicians, for me, this reflects the main perspective of ACT for music. You can easily feel that in ACT albums when you listen to them.

Freedom, diversity, talent, niceness, being hard to categorize… It is normal to face with authenticity and beauty when you gather these. Musicians are very important for Siggi Loch. They are carefully discovered by this music enthusiast producer, recorded and presented to world. The comfortable environment that Siggi Loch supplied to them results in perfect and spiritually complete albums.

This is certainly the most important and exciting concert in this year’s Akbank Jazz Festival for me. I am sure they will make us live an unforgettable night and they will send me a travel that I have joined so many times in this fabulous musical world. One last note is that there will be held another concert in Lütfi Kırdar just before ACT Jubilee Night in which you will experience Miles Smiles conceptual band gathered as students of Miles Davis: Larry Coryell, Darryl Jones, Joey DeFrancesco, Omar Hakim and Wallace Roney. Lütfi Kırdar will be an individual festival place within the festival on October 7th where you will see approximately ten important musician on stage in 4 hours.
